I ♥ Milton Glaser
There’s a lot of advice about how to be a great designer flung around the internet these days. And much of it comes from people who have no idea what it takes to be a great designer. Milton Glaser, however, is not one of them. Milton is famous for the I ♥ NY logo, his Bob Dylan poster and a plethora of other things. He’s a veritable juggernaut in the design community.
The other night, while Stumbling into the wee hours fo the morning, a page popped up that got my attention. It was from Milton’s website and it’s entitled “Ten Things I Have Learned”. I read the article through twice… reading it made me feel like at last I’m getting the kind of advice that as a freelance designer was actually useful to me. I couldn’t agree more with his points about how “you can only work for people you like” (have I learnt that the hard way!) and “the good is the enemy of the great”. I found his point about how you live changes your brain particularly interesting. I highly recommend giving the article a read. Warning: You may get the first piece of genuine design advice you’ve heard in ages.
Update: This morning I clicked over to one of my favorite artists blog, Fantasio. To my surprise he had written a really thoughtful article about Milton Glaser where he expresses his thoughts about something artists have to deal with a lot – the fear of failure. Fantasio’s article is insightful and I recommend clicking over there to give it a read. I also highly recommend watching the video below about Milton’s thoughts about confronting your fears.
